Temporary Autonomous Zones
The Third Faction officially formed as a cross-factional collective inside the World of Warcraft on Valentine's Day 2008, in a self-declared Temporary Autonomous Zone.
In order to elude formal structures of control an inter-species, cross-factional group of individuals banded together to form a Temporary Autonomous Zone within the World of Warcraft. Once citizens of Azeroth, this band or free thinkers fought to free a section of land in the Eastern Kingdoms from both Alliance and Horde, player characters and NPCs alike. In this new free zone they held council and voted to enact a new and temporary manner of governing the space. One that was based on a non-hierarchical system of social relationships inspired by anarchist philosophy and the writings of Hakim Bey. Like all TAZ, the new governance was temporary as was the space. "Any attempt at permanence that goes beyond the moment deteriorates to a structured system that inevitably stifles individual creativity. It is this chance at creativity that is real empowerment."
However within the order, chaos, structure, freedom, blood and enlightenment of the TAZ, a seed was formed. An ideal that became a campaign against tyranny and war. A subset of those that took up residence in Temporary Autonomous Zone during the time of its existence formed an activist collective of artists and free thinkers, in order to campaign this campaign. This collective is known today as The Third Faction.
